For many men, the decision to have a vasectomy is clear, but the actual process of booking can feel less certain. This guide explains step by step how to book a vasectomy, including the options for appointments, what it costs, Medicare rebates, what to bring, and how to confirm or reschedule.
If you are ready to take the next step, you can enquire to book a vasectomy online or by calling our practice directly.
Choosing the Right Vasectomy Clinic
Booking is about more than just finding a date, it’s about choosing a vasectomy clinic you trust. At Gold Coast Vasectomy, I’ve been performing vasectomies since 1993, with over 11,000 procedures completed.
You can make an enquiry through our website or by calling. If you submit an online enquiry, we can respond via email or phone. If you have specific questions, I’m always happy to respond personally.
Step 1 – Decide How You’re Getting a Vasectomy
When getting a vasectomy, you have two booking options:
- Initial consult only (a 30-minute appointment) with the vasectomy procedure scheduled for another day.
- Consult and procedure together on the same day (the option most men prefer).
When done back-to-back, you’ll spend about one hour with us in total. Partners are welcome to sit in during the consultation, but they usually don’t attend the treatment room unless requested.
Step 2 – Plan Your Vasectomy Procedure and Timing
The vasectomy procedure itself takes about 15 minutes and is carried out under a local anaesthetic. Most men are able to drive themselves home afterwards.
Here are key points to plan around:
- Recovery: Avoid heavy lifting for 5–7 days. Desk work can usually resume the next day.
- Sports and activity: Wait until you’ve fully recovered before returning to strenuous activity.
- Sedative option: If you are anxious, I can provide a sedative/tranquiliser at the consult. If you take this option, you’ll need a driver.
I perform vasectomies Tuesday through Friday. At the time of enquiry, we’ll let you know the earliest available appointment. You can also go on our waitlist, and if an earlier time opens up, we’ll call you.

Step 3 – Understand Costs for Vasectomy Services
The cost of booking a vasectomy is $840. Most patients receive a Medicare rebate of $228, which is deposited directly into your account if your bank details are registered with Medicare.
- The consultation is bulk-billed. If you decide not to proceed, there’s no charge.
- If you have private health insurance, check to see if they provide an additional rebate. Use item number 37623 when you call your fund.
- A referral is optional. Because I am a GP, you don’t need one, but if you have one, please bring it along.

Step 4 – What to Bring to Your Vasectomy Appointment
When booking your vasectomy, be prepared to bring:
- Medicare card.
- Private health details.
- Referral (if you have one).
- Comfortable clothing.
- A driver, only if you are prescribed a sedative.
Partners are welcome at the consultation for support.
Step 5 – Confirming or Changing Your Vasectomy Booking
Appointments are not confirmed by email alone. Because we need to go through preparation and screening with you, bookings must be finalised over the phone.
- Online enquiry: Start the process online; we’ll respond by email or call.
- Phone call: Required for final booking.
If you need to reschedule: It’s easy to arrange, with a waitlist option for earlier times.
